I do not feel this strongly against gaming, but I found it interesting, so thought you guys would also:

This blog is a class project at Lipscomb University. Our goal is to write our own textbook, and we will use this blog to generate ideas and comment on them before we get to the final writing stage. We are interested in the role that old and new media play in shaping the society in which we live and in shaping the lives that we live in our families.
This is very disturbing. Very, very disturbing. As someone who doesn't play very many video games and is somewhat ignorant of the gaming world, this scares me. These people all have such addictions to their games that without them they've become lifeless. Take for example, the teen who shot his parents for taking away his xbox, or the father who killed (?) his daughter when she broke is xbox. The others listed in this article had trouble recognizing the gaming world from the real world, like the guy who killed the cops as if he were playing GTA. Are any restrictions being put on the internet gaming world? Is this necessary at this point? At which point will this become necessary? Is there someway to regulate this and incorporate some sort of balance?
ReplyDeleteThese are definitely some of the worst horror stories about video game related violence I have ever read.
ReplyDeleteOne of the common readings we received pointed out that there was very little evidence to support the myths about video games causing children to replicate the violent actions of the game.
While the above are examples of terrible acts related to video gaming, there still is no proof to suggest that the users were somehow brainwashed by the video games to go shoot police officers for instance. If a kid is capable of going and shooting police officers without remorse or guilt, the child must have some serious emotional and or psychological issues that need to be addressed. I don't think video games can be held solely responsible in any of these instances.
I agree with caroline. I myself play video games and sometimes and flabberghasted about some of the things on video games today. I think sometimes its a little crazy and im 22. To think young kids are playing these games is not good. but once again it comes back to parenting. They have to watch over kids. But then again you have to ask yourself what if its the parents playing the games and shooting their kids over breaking it. I dont know what to say about that it just scary and sad.
